Behind the Detail

What a Detailer Checks Before the First Wash: The Pre-Detail Inspection

A great detail starts before any water touches the paint. Here is the walk-through owner Keith Call runs on every vehicle that rolls into our Chandler shop.

Quick answer: A pre-detail inspection is a full walk-through of the vehicle before any cleaning starts. The detailer checks the seats for stains and wear, the cracks and crevices where dirt hides, and every panel for swirls and scratches. The findings decide which products and methods each surface gets, so nothing gets missed and nothing gets over-worked.

Watch Keith run the inspection in the video below, then read on for what each step covers and why it changes the final result.

Why Does a Pre-Detail Inspection Matter?

The inspection matters because no two vehicles arrive in the same condition. A car back from a summer road trip carries baked-on bugs and road film. A daily commuter hides crumbs and coffee spills in the seat seams. A weekend cruiser might look clean but carry swirl marks from years of automatic washes. One flat process cannot serve all three.

Keith inspects first so the plan matches the car. The right product goes on the right surface, problem areas get flagged before work starts, and the client hears about any pre-existing damage up front instead of after the fact.

What Does the Inspection Cover?

The walk-through covers the whole vehicle, inside and out:

  • Seats. Stains, spills, and wear patterns. A set-in stain on cloth needs a different product than a scuff on leather.
  • Cracks and crevices. Seat rails, cup holders, vents, and door pockets where dirt, crumbs, and dust collect out of sight.
  • Panels. Every exterior panel gets checked for swirls, scratches, water spots, and other paint imperfections that decide whether the car needs a wash, a polish, or full correction.
  • Trim and tight spots. Seams, badges, and moldings that trap wax residue and grime.

How Does This Change the Final Result?

The inspection turns the detail into a plan instead of a guess. A panel with heavy swirls gets a correction approach while clean paint gets protected, not cut. A stained seat gets the correct chemical on the first pass. Hidden crevices make the checklist so they never get skipped.

The result holds up because every surface got the treatment it needed. That is the standard on every vehicle at our shop, from a daily driver to a road-trip Toyota covered in bugs.

Pre-Detail Inspection Questions We Hear From Clients

What is a pre-detail inspection?

A pre-detail inspection is a full walk-through of the vehicle before any cleaning begins. The detailer checks seats, crevices, panels, and trim to document the condition and build the plan for that specific car.

How long does the inspection take?

A thorough inspection takes a few minutes. Those minutes save time during the detail because the team already knows what each surface needs before work starts.

Do I need to be there for the inspection?

You are welcome to walk the car with us, and many clients do. If you drop off, we flag anything notable and reach out before we proceed with work beyond the original scope.

What happens if the inspection finds paint damage?

We show you what we found and explain the options. Light swirls might call for a polish, while deeper defects may need paint correction. You decide before any extra work happens.
