5 Worst Mistakes Car Owners Make When Detailing Their Own Cars in Phoenix, AZ

By Keith Call, Owner of South Mountain Auto Detail

If you live in Phoenix, you already know our cars go through it. Dust storms, 115 degree afternoons, UV that feels personal, and then a random monsoon roll-through that leaves mineral spots baked in by the next morning. It’s a lot.

I totally get why people want to detail their own car. It’s satisfying. You can throw on a podcast, work at your own pace, and when it’s done you stand back like, “Yep. I did that.” I respect it.

But I’ll be honest, I see the same handful of mistakes over and over, especially with Phoenix heat making everything harder. I’m Keith Call, owner of South Mountain Auto Detail, and this list is basically the greatest hits of “I was just trying to do a simple wash” turning into “why does my paint look worse now?” If you’re in the East Valley, you might also want to peek at our Chandler detailing page or our Ahwatukee detailing page since the “Phoenix factor” changes how we approach protection.

1) Washing in direct sunlight (Phoenix is not playing around)

This is the big one. Phoenix sun will dry water on your paint in what feels like 30 seconds. When the water dries that fast, you get mineral deposits and water spots. And sometimes those spots don’t just sit on top, they etch into the clear coat.

People tell me, “It looked fine when it was wet.” Yep. Everything looks good when it’s wet. Then it dries and you see the outlines of every drip. If you’re doing it yourself, wash early morning or late evening, or in full shade. And dry quickly. I mean it. Panel by panel works best here.

One small tip that helps a lot: rinse the panel, wash it, rinse again, then dry that panel before moving on. It feels slower but it saves you from chasing spots around the whole car. Phoenix does not give you extra time, it’s rude like that.

2) Using dish soap or “whatever cleaner is in the garage”

I know, soap is soap, right? Not really. Dish soap is designed to cut grease off plates. It can strip wax and sealants off your paint, and if you’ve had any protection put on the car, you’re basically undoing it. And protection matters here, like a lot.

Same thing with random degreasers and harsh wheel acids. Some of them are way too aggressive for modern clear coat and plastics. I’ve seen trim fade out in one weekend because someone used a strong cleaner and left it to dry in the sun. That’s a rough feeling.

If you’re going DIY, use a pH balanced car shampoo, a dedicated wheel cleaner, and something made for interior surfaces. Your car is not a kitchen counter. Also, read the label. I know that sounds obvious, but people get excited and skip it and then call me later like “uhhh…”

3) Reusing dirty towels (hello swirl marks)

This mistake is sneaky because the damage builds slowly. You grab a towel you used last time. Maybe it fell on the driveway once. Maybe it picked up a little grit from the trunk. You don’t see it, so you keep going.

That grit becomes sandpaper. And then you start drying, rubbing, buffing, trying to get that last streak out. Those micro-scratches stack up and show up as swirl marks, especially on black paint. In Phoenix sun, it’s like the swirls are highlighted for everyone to see.

At our shop we separate towels by job. Paint towels never touch wheels. Interior towels never touch paint. If a towel hits the ground, it’s done for that job. It sounds picky, but swirl removal (paint correction) costs way more than a few extra towels. If you want a “safe wash” plan tailored for the area, we talk about that a lot with customers on our Chandler car detailing side because the dust here is constant.

4) Applying wax or ceramic coating the wrong way

This is the one that can get expensive fast. Wax feels simple, and it usually is. Ceramic coatings, though, are not a “wipe it on and walk away” thing. Prep matters. Temperature matters. Timing matters.

In Phoenix heat, coatings can flash too quickly. That means you get high spots and streaking that harden into the surface. I’ve had people tell me, “I thought it would level out after a day.” It won’t. Once it cures, you’re polishing it off, and depending on what product was used, sometimes it takes more than one step.

Also, if the paint isn’t decontaminated and corrected first, you are sealing in defects. Like, congrats, the swirls are now protected. Not what anyone wants. If you’re in Ahwatukee and your car sits outside near the foothills a lot, dust and fallout build up quicker than people think, so the prep step becomes even more important. That’s why we spell out the approach on our Ahwatukee mobile detailing page too.

5) Ignoring the interior until it’s too late

Phoenix interiors take a beating. Dashboards crack. Leather dries out. Plastics fade. Steering wheels get that shiny “hand oil” look that never feels clean. A lot of people focus on the exterior and then basically forget the interior exists until it’s really bad.

If you do one thing for your interior, protect the dash and the high-touch surfaces. Use a proper UV protectant with a natural finish. Please be careful with glossy dressings. The super shiny stuff looks clean for like 8 minutes, then it attracts dust and can create glare on the windshield. I’ve driven cars where the dash reflection was honestly distracting.

If you’re the type that parks outside at work (most of us are), interior protection is not optional. It’s part of keeping the car from feeling “old” way sooner than it should.

Bonus mistake: trusting a tunnel wash as your main plan

I get it. It’s fast. It’s cheap. You’re busy. But those spinning brushes hold dirt from the cars before you, then drag it across your paint. Over time it creates that dull, swirly look. Phoenix sun makes it super obvious, especially on darker colors.

I’m not saying never use a quick wash in a pinch. Just don’t let that be the only thing you do if you care about your paint and resale value.

Quick wrap-up (so you can actually use this)

  • Wash in shade or early/late, and dry panel by panel.
  • Use car-safe chemicals, not dish soap or random degreasers.
  • Use clean, dedicated towels. If it drops, swap it.
  • Do not rush coatings. Prep and environment matter.
  • Protect the interior from UV before it cracks and fades.
